Should we jump at the chance to get Windows Vista as soon as it comes out?
Windows VistaEverybody is making a big deal about Windows Vista, so lets take a look at it. At work I support approximatly 3000 end-users and I can say with relative assurance that we wont be going to Vista anytime soon. My experience with Microsoft operating systems is that there is always a break-in period. With 98 it was about 2 years. With XP it was almost the same length of time. Then they came out with XP service pack 2 and that brought even more fun. I dont expect Vista to be any different. Hardware RequirementsThe main issues I see are going to be the hardware requirements to run the new interface. Of course from what we are hearing we can run Vista without all the bells and whistles, but then why would I upgrade from the relatively stable XP? Want to know more? Check out Microsofts Vista site. These are the hardware requirements to run Vista with all the bells and whistles:
What to Do?Now I have several different systems, each one used for something different. Only one of them will meet these requirements and its my gaming rig. There is no way Im trying out a new operating system on my gaming rig. My poxy server will always run a Linux distribution, my wifes computer runs XP Home and that will be upgraded to XP Pro as soon as I can afford another license. Personally I can't see a reason to buy this operating system. Having had a chance to play around with Vista I finally came to this conclusion...If you buy a brand new computer after the first of the year you will at least have the option of having this operating system installed. Aside from that instance I just can't see the advantages to moving forward at this point. Of course some people disagree with this. If you are one of those lets discuss it.
