Remove Balloon Tips in XP

Getting rid of Balloon tips in Windows XP

© Michael Simpson

I go crazy looking at the balloon tips in Windows XP. So I found this little registry tweak to turn them off.

NOTE: Making changes to the registry can cause serious harm to your computer if done incorrectly. Always backup your registry before making any changes.

This littel tweak works great if you hate those Windows balloons that popup out of nowhere, with seemingly usefull information but in truth they are usually just annoying.

  1. In the left hand pane navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
  2. Right click on the white region of Regedit's right hand pane, click New, and then click DWORD Value
  3. Enter EnableBalloonTips for the name of the new DWORD Value and press Enter. The new value should now appear in Regedit's right-hand column.
  4. Right click the new value and choose Modify.
  5. Click Decimal and set the Value Data field to 0, then click OK.

By changing putting the value to 0 we are telling it not to put the balloon tips up.
