This is a short tutorial on how to backup the registry in Windows 2000 and Windows XP
Backing up the Windows 2000 registry
This is pretty straightforward.
- Click Start - Programs -Accessories choose Backup.
- In Backup, choose the Backup tab.
- In the Backup tab, check the "System State" box, this will create a backup of boot files and the system registry.
Restoring the Windows 2000 registry
Any backups created using the above procedure can easily be restored using the same facility.
Backing up the Windows XP registry
Microsoft Windows XP includes a new feature known as system restore. This new feature enables a user to backup and restore their system files from an earlier time. By default this feature automatically creates a backup of the system each day.These are the steps to create a restore point of your system.
- Click Start - Programs -Accessories -System Tools - System Restore
- Select "Create a restore point"
- Click Next, you will be prompted to enter a Description of the Restore Point. Click Next.
Restoring the Windows XP registry
Restoring the XP registry is just as easy.
- Click Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore
- Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click Next.
- Choose the day and the restore point desired and click next.
