How to use MSCONFIG in Windows 2000

© Michael Simpson

If you have Windows 2000 and want to use this program you will have to find it somewhere else and install it.

This is a great little tool to help with some initial troubleshooting. However its not included in Windows 2000. It will work with 2000 it just wasnt included. If you have Windows XP installed on another computer you can simply copy MSCONFIG.exe from your XP computer (do a search for msconfig.exe on your c: drive) to C:\winnt\system folder on the Windows 2000 machine. If not you can find several different versions of Msconfig.exe located HERE.

You can start MSCONFIG the same way that you do in XP or Windows 98 Start - Run and type msconfig and click OK.

NOTE

MSCONFIG is a standalone program and will run on any computer. You will need the correct version however. The Windows 98 version functions best in Windows 98 and NT. The XP version functions best with Windows XP and 2000 SP4

Because of the way that the Windows 98 version starts up, if you try to run this version with NT, XP or 2000 you will get errors saying that files couldnt be found, these are:

  • config.sys
  • autoexec.bat
  • win.ini
  • system.ini

You can ignore these errors, they are normal and will not affect the functionality of MSCONFIG. From here you can continue to use the program as usual. If you use the XP version in 2000 you will not recieve any errors.
